CV/DV Workshop Series: #1 History of Community Violence

Welcome to the first session in our new Community and Domestic Violence Workshop Series! This year, instead of holding one large annual CV/DV training, we’re offering smaller, focused sessions designed for advocates to dive deeper into specific topics. Each session will provide space to workshop ideas and strengthen trauma-informed approaches that support survivors at the intersections of community and domestic violence. We’re starting off with “History of Community Violence,” the first in this series.

Workshop #1: History of CV
To effectively respond to domestic violence, it’s important to understand the broader history of community violence and how it shapes the experiences of survivors today. This workshop will highlight key moments and patterns in the history of community violence, connecting them to the challenges advocates see in their day-to-day work. Participants will walk away with a clearer understanding of how these histories impact survivors and communities, and practical ways to use this knowledge to strengthen advocacy, build trust, and foster safer environments.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Point out key events and patterns that shaped community violence over time.
  2. See how these histories affect the safety and trust of survivors today.
  3. Make connections between community violence and domestic violence in their daily work.
  4. Use this understanding to provide stronger, more supportive advocacy.
  5. Find ways to build trust and partnerships in the community using lessons from history.

Workshop sessions will be hosted quarterly. Attendance for each session is not required, but suggested.

This virtual training is provided for members and IDHS-funded organizations only; and will issues 2 CEUs at no cost. For Social Work CEUs, please indicate this clearly in your registration and later in your evaluation. Please confirm here if your organization is a member of The Network.

A Zoom link will be provided the day before training begins.
