Karina's Law Training Series

This training series is a three-part series covering Karina's Law, firearm remedies and safety planning, and best practices in completing paperwork for survivors seeking the firearm remedy as part of an order of protection in Illinois. The series is open to direct support staff at community/nonprofit service providers who assist survivors, like legal advocates and supervisors.

Training 1: Domestic Gun Violence and Firearms Laws in Illinois (Thursday, Feb. 26, 2-3:30pm)

This training is a foundations level training for direct support staff based at community/nonprofit service providers who assist survivors. This training will lay the groundwork for a deeper understanding of the intersection of firearms and domestic violence. In this training, participants can be expected to come away with an understanding of Illinois firearm related laws, the gap in systems leading up to the passage of Karina's law and a foundation level understanding of the process of obtaining firearms relief as part of an order of protection in Karina's law.

Training 2: Firearm Safety Planning (Thursday, March 5, 2-3:30pm)

This training is intended for direct support staff based at community/nonprofit service providers who assist survivors in safety planning around the intersection of firearms and domestic violence. This training is specifically intended to support staff in walking clients through determining whether or not legal firearms relief is the right fit for them and safety planning when a firearm is a part of their experience of abuse.

Training 3: Best Practices (Thursday, March 12, 2-3:30pm)

Designed for community-based/nonprofit professionals working with survivors of gender-based violence, this session will provide practical guidance on how to effectively incorporate the firearm remedy into OP petitions to enhance survivor safety.

Participants will learn:

  • Key provisions of Karina’s Law and how it strengthens firearm-related protections in OP cases
  • Step-by-step strategies for requesting an OP with the firearm remedy in court
  • Best practices for documentation, survivor-centered advocacy, and collaboration with law enforcement and the courts
  • Tips for navigating common challenges

Whether you’re new to this process or looking to strengthen your approach, this training will offer concrete tools and insights to help ensure survivors are better protected.
